Like many moms, I’m always looking for ways to make my child’s world a little more magical. So when my Minecraft-obsessed son asked for a themed bedroom, I thought, how hard could it be? Turns out, this project was not just about decorating—it was about tapping into my creativity, problem-solving on the fly, and proving to myself that I am capable of bringing ideas to life.

Whether you're a busy mom looking for fun DIY projects or simply want to add a personal touch to your home, this step-by-step Minecraft-inspired bedroom transformation will inspire you to take on your next creative challenge!

Step 1: Finding Inspiration & Planning the Design

Before jumping in, I scrolled through Pinterest DIY room ideas (because, of course). The goal?

Modern bedroom with a green pixelated bedspread, gaming chair, and shelves. Green and white walls with framed art create a vibrant feel.

A Minecraft-themed room that felt fun yet slightly mature. I kept coming back to one design—a grey brick accent wall paired with a bold green color palette.

Since I have ADHD, staying organized with projects like this can be a challenge. So, I broke the process into small, manageable steps and gathered everything I needed:

Paint Colors:

Supplies:

Step 2: DIY Brick Wall – The Game-Changer Feature

The first step? Painting the brick accent wall. Here’s how I did it:

Step 1: Painted the entire wall dark grey (this will act as the grout between bricks).

Step 2: Once dry, used painter’s tape to create evenly spaced horizontal and vertical brick patterns.

Step 3: Used a laser level (seriously, best $40 spent) to keep lines straight.

Step 4: Painted inside the taped sections with the lighter grey color (Tundra Frost).

Step 5: Peeled off the tape to reveal a stunning brick wall!

As someone with ADHD, I usually struggle with long tasks, but this project was oddly therapeutic. Focusing on the repetitive, hands-on work helped me stay engaged and present, something I didn’t expect.

Step 3: Creating a Pixelated Accent Wall (Because Minecraft = Pixels!)

To bring even more of the Minecraft aesthetic to life, I created a pixelated wall design using vinyl sheets. This was an easy, renter-friendly DIY project that had huge impact!

Room with green and black pixel wall, TV, books on shelves, guitar, beanbag, and storage cubes. Cozy and organized setting.

✔ Ordered green vinyl sheets (12x12 squares) from lowcostvinyl.com

✔ Cut them to size and stuck them in a pixelated pattern

✔ Adjusted as needed to create a fun, random pixel effect

Three vinyl sheets described with color samples: Dark Grey (2 sheets), Light Green (4 sheets), Dark Green (4 sheets). Labels include sizes and codes.

Total cost? Under $30! And the best part? No painting, no mess, and completely removable.

Step 4: Adding Functional & Decorative DIY Shelves

Next, my son needed a way to display his trophies and collectibles. I decided to make DIY floating shelves—an easy and budget-friendly way to add custom storage to any kid’s room.

✔ Used 1x10x8 boards (cut to size at Home Depot!)

✔ Sanded and stained them with Varathane Aged Walnut

✔ Mounted them using industrial pipe brackets for a rugged, modern look

Pro Tip: If DIY shelving feels intimidating, Home Depot will cut the wood for free—so all you have to do is stain and install!

Step 5: The Final Touches That Made It Magical

With the painting, pixel wall, and shelves done, it was time to pull the whole look together. Here’s what made the biggest difference:

💡 Green Rope Lights – I simply duct-taped these behind the bed frame (super easy, huge impact!)

🎮 Vinyl Minecraft Stickers – Perfect for adding character to the space

When my son walked in and saw the fully transformed Minecraft bedroom, his face lit up—and that made every moment of hard work so worth it.

What This DIY Project Taught Me

I went into this thinking I was just painting a room, but I came out of it realizing:

Creativity isn’t just for Pinterest-perfect DIYers—it’s for all of us.

Taking on a project (even when you’re unsure) builds confidence.

Having ADHD doesn’t mean I can’t finish what I start—I just need the right approach.

And most importantly? This project reminded me how much I love creating.

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to start a DIY home project—this is your sign. Even small changes can transform your space (and your confidence).
